Individual Dental Plan

Individual Dental Plan or discount dental plans become necessary when you
are not covered under employer dental insurance scheme. Your dental plans
will allow you to have dental treatment at discounted fees structure.
Your discount dental plan company will provide the schedule of discounted
dental treatment costs when you buy your individual dental plan. For
example actual treatment costs for a dental X-Ray may be $100 but under
discount dental plan this may be as low as $45. There are different types
of discount dental plans, and unlike a dental insurance you can choose
the plan that you find suitable to your needs.

Individual Dental Plans will usually cover you and if you wish cover for
your family you can choose the family dental plans. Most dental plans
will pay for preventative care including two cleaning a year as a
preventative measure. Take advantage of this feature to avoid major
dental problems. Most dental problems are preventable and easier to
correct at an earlier age. These dental services for preventative care
are often referred to as “scheduled services.” Always read all the
clauses of your dental plan to familiarize yourself about the services
for which you will be covered.

Unlike Dental Insurance, dental plans usually do not have major
exclusions. Under a dental insurance you might have to be with carrier
for 6 months to a 1-year before you become eligible for major dental work
including bridges, crowns, impacted teeth, and root canals.
But your discount dental plans will allow for all treatment almost
immediately. There will be no waiting periods. Also, under a dental
insurance plan there will a limit or maximum amount of benefits for
services that your dental insurance company for one calendar year. But
there are no limits under discount dental plans

Is dental insurance necessary?

There are different types of insurance covering various aspects of our
lives – like Dental Insurance, life insurance, car insurance, home
insurance and so on. In the US today, it is indeed extremely difficult to
live with out proper insurance cover. Many types of insurance like car
insurance for instance have become mandatory in most states of the US.
Unless you are covered under some type of medical insurance most
hospitals wouldn’t even think of treating you.

Coming to dental insurance, whether you require it at all is a question
only you can answer. If you have recurring dental problems and have
needed dental care from time to time through out your life the it is
obvious you need dental insurance to help you cover the costs of your
dental diseases. Dental procedures can be very expensive. Even with
fluoride in our water millions of Americans each year have cavities
filled, root canals preformed and teeth extracted.

In case your employer provides dental insurance then you don’t need a
independent dental cover. But if for some reason your pre-existing dental
conditions have been excluded from your cover then it is best to get a
dental discount plan that does not have any such limitations. Check out
the following dental plans.

Select the Right Dental Plan For Your Dental Needs!- Part 2

We were discussing about selecting a suitable dental plan for your needs
yesterday. I promised to write more about the questions you need to ask
before you make your final decision about choosing a dental discount plan.

Here is the list then:

1. Are you allowed to choose your own dentist? If not, do you at least
have the option of changing a dentist if you are not happy with the
dentist you might be alloted or whom you selected in the first plan under
the dental plan?

2. Who determines the treatment – dentist, patient or
considerations/limitations of dental plan? For example some plans provide
for only the least expensive treatment, which may not be the best option
for you.

3. What are the limitations if any, w.r.t dollar amount , treatment types
imposed by the plans?

4. Are diagnostic, preventive and emergency services covered under the
plan?

5. Are all dental problems covered like crowns and bridges, braces, root
canals, oral surgery and treatment of periodontal diseases?

6. If you need specialist care, does the plan allow for it? Can you
choose to go to any specialist? Or are they any restrictions?

7. Are all major dental problems covered – braces, dentures, implants and
so on?

8. And most important what kind of emergency services and treatments can
you avail of?

It is your responsibility to get answers to all the above questions and
others you might have
before you invest in a suitable dental discount plan.

Dental Insurance Quote

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Getting a dental insurance quote before purchasing your chosen insurance plan makes good sense. Although you might have compared policies for features, it’s also important to compare for costs. Otherwise, how do you know that you’re getting the best value for your money? And purchasing insurance is all about saving money and eliminating risk.
Figuring out the costs of a dental insurance quote is rarely as straightforward as it first appears. All too often, you are left comparing ?apples to oranges?. First, find areas of similarity in the dental services stated and chart these. Then, look for the most specific way possible how each item will price out. There will certainly be variations, and you also need to consider the expertise of the person providing the services.
For example, when comparing the cost of a teeth cleaning, will your teeth be cleaned by a hygienist or by a qualified dentist? How thorough will that cleaning be? Some offices will spend 45 minutes cleaning a patient’s teeth, while in others, half an hour is the norm. Getting a dental insurance quote will clarify what to expect.
You may need to make some phone calls to get an accurate dental insurance quote because of the issues mentioned above. Or you may have enough information from a brochure or web site if it goes into a great deal of detail. Before deciding on an insurance purchase, you will likely feel more confident in your decision after speaking with a company representative and then getting written information to back up what you were told.
It’s always best to have a written statement of the basic costs along with your dental insurance policy. That quote is your protection that the costs will be as described, and not dramatically increased. A written dental insurance quote is legally binding, and if the services you receive are not as described, you have recourse.
A reputable insurance company will provide a dental insurance quote to meet your specific needs. It’s a good idea to consider all aspects of your requirements, and get something flexible enough to cover items you might net need immediately but could want at a later date, such as orthodontics for a child.
You’ll also want to see what the discount dental insurance plans have to offer. A dental insurance quote from any of these plans will be quite different, as these plans offer specific discounts for the usual dental services. They are not typical insurance plans, but a network program that offers discounted rates for their members.
They can be very good value if the plan you choose is comprehensive enough to provide the necessary services at a deeply discounted price. And this is where the investigation mentioned a few paragraphs earlier comes into play. It’s important to look carefully into what is offered and how, in order to be able to compare it to a dental insurance quote.

Select the Right Dental Plan For Your Dental Needs!

All that information about the various dental plans, dental insurance
companies, and dental coverage details can be really overwhelming.

Sometimes, I just want to give up all the research and go, just get about
ANY Dental Plan.

But then, the doubts start creeping in. Am I doing the right thing, by my
family, by me.? Will my dental plan stand by me in an emergency? And so
on and so forth.

Well, stop panicking. Let’s get this sorted out real easy.

Now, get a pen and paper and write down the answers to the following
questions.

1. Do you have a dental insurance cover from your employer? If so, is
your family covered under this dental cover plan? Is it a comprehensive
dental insurance cover?

If you answered NO to one or all of the above questions then you will
need independent dental coverage from the dental discount plan providers.

2. Is their cap on your dental cover? If yes, then too you need a
supplemental dental cover that can take over in case you exceed your
limit for the dental treatments you need in a year.

3. Are you looking for an individual dental plan or family dental plan?
Do you know the meaning and differences between the following types of
dental plans – a direct reimbursement, indemnity, preferred provider
organization (PPO), dental health maintenance organization (DMHO),
discount/referral and reduced fee for services (RFFS) and point of
service (POS) plans.

For an answer to the above question refer to a previous post in this blog
on the different types of dental plans.

4. After deciding on the type of dental plan – you need to answer some
more questions which I will try to cover tomorrow. Or you can browse
through the rest of the blog and you will find them in some of older
posts.

Important questions to ask before you say yes to dental discount
plans/dental insurance.

The NADP recommends that people make sure about the following points
before they invest in a dental insurance or discount plan:

Are you licensed to offer this plan in this state?

Before you choose to buy a dental discount plan or a dental insurance
ensure that the provider is licensed to sell his product in the state.

Are you registered with the Better Business Bureau?

Check if the chosen dental insurance company or dental plan provider is
registered with the BBB. The BBB maintains a large database of companies,
where they operate, contact information and complaint data.

Find out the physical location and physical, phone, email, web and
details.

A genuine dental plan company will readily part with all their contact
information so, you can get in touch with them whenever the need arises.
On the other hand a fake company is likely to be hesitant to give you
this information, or it will give you an address that is nothing more
than a local post office box.

Can you mail me specifics on the plan before I sign up?

The not-so-genuine dental discount plans are more likely to collect your
“membership fee” before they will send you any information. All
legitimate plans will clearly specify most of the information you are
looking for upfront.

Do you have a Web site with more information?

Most legitimate dental plan companies have extensive Web sites that
outline their plan benefits, approximate costs and the providers
accepting the plan in your area.

Can I get a list of dental care providers on the plan?

Try to avoid dental plans that are not upfront with you in their
dealings. Avoid any plan that cannot provide you with a list of dentists
who accept their plan.

Can I think about it and get back to you next week?

Aggressive dental insurance plans or dental plans providers use
high-pressure techniques to get you to join the day you call. Avoid these
people, as they are not likely to be very responsive when you want their
help after you sign-up.

Is your plan endorsed by or affiliated with a legitimate national
organization?

Look for the genuine affiliations. Always check the antecedents of the
claims made discount dental plan provider. According to the NADP, a
recent bogus dental plan said the “United Dental Association” endorsed
it. There is no such organization.
